Boneyard: We saved the best for last…

Introducing Boneyard Whisky on June 3!

Boneyard is an archive of Odd Society history—a testament to our whisky heritage. With a nod to the Solera process of fractionally blending alcohol like wine and sherry in such a way that the finished product is a mixture of ages, we collected a litre of whisky from every bottling session since 2016 and saved the blend in one single cask. Rye, single malt and maple whiskies were all married together with the oldest addition being over seven years old and the youngest being four. We invite you to drink to the past and dream of the future with the release of Boneyard; a wonderfully unique, complex and rich whisky.

Boneyard will be released THURSDAY, JUNE 3 at 3pm exclusively AT THE DISTILLERY. A small allotment of bottles will be available at our online bottle shop as of Sunday, June 6 to provide those of you who are unable to visit the distillery in person an opportunity to purchase a bottle.

With only 150 bottles of Boneyard available, we encourage you to arrive at 3pm on Thursday, June 3 to secure a bottle and not be disappointed. Boneyard is priced at $89 inclusive of tax and deposit, and limited to two bottles per person. The distillery is unable to accommodate holds or advance purchases.

P.S. Boneyard would make a great Father’s Day gift.

And… if you are looking for something more extravagant in the way of whisky, we have held back a few of our Five Year Whisky Club memberships with Dad in mind. Visit our online shop for details.

Five-Year Whisky Bottle Club—Join Today!

Introducing a unique program for whisky lovers: The Odd Society Five-Year Bottle Club.

Odd Society Spirits’ exciting new program is specially designed for whisky lovers and anyone who wants to learn about whisky.  As a member of the Odd Society Five-Year Bottle Club, you will receive one 750 ml bottle of 46% abv single malt spirit/whisky every year for five years. Interestingly, and importantly, the spirit you receive each year is all from the same original batch. The idea is to follow the flavour maturation journey of a single whisky from new-make spirit to maturity.

We begin by distilling a massive batch of new-make single malt whisky and filling a large number of casks. As a member, you will receive a bottle of 46% fresh, new-make spirit. After one year, the spirit you receive will be one year old, after two years the spirit will be two years old (still not technically whisky), year three, three years old and so on, until year five, when you receive a final bottle of five-year-old single malt whisky. The whisky is distilled from 100% BC-grown malted barley, aged in once-used American white oak casks. Each year, all the barrels are emptied, the spirit remarried in a tank, and then returned to the same casks. Each year, the label will commemorate the whisky milestone.

A membership in the five year bottle club costs $295 + tax and, as mentioned, gets you six 750 ml bottles of spirit from the same original batch. This is an exclusive opportunity to follow and learn about whisky as it transforms from new-make spirit to single malt through the magic of time and barrel aging. To join us on this whisky journey, please email info@oddsocietyspirits.com and we will send you the signup details.

♥️ Neighbourly cocktails bridge the gap between physically distanced hearts

We are partnering up with one of our favourite neighbourhood joints, The Red Wagon, to encourage safe connection on Valentine’s Day weekend through a special cocktail collaboration. Pull up a stool and let bar managers Olivia Povarchook (Odd Society Spirits) and Rob Scope (The Red Wagon) lift your spirits with their mid-month ‘Neighbourly Love’ cocktails. Inspired by their mutual love for community and a strong desire to nurture a sense of togetherness even though physically distanced, this innovative duo partnered up to create two distinctive cocktails in support of hospitality workers while remaining mindful of current health and safety protocols.

From February 11 to 13 (14th at The Red Wagon), guests are encouraged to visit Odd Society Spirits and The Red Wagon either solo or together in their respective bubbles and enjoy the ‘Neighbourly Love’ cocktails: Mighty Aphrodite (Strawberry-infused Wallflower Gin, Bittersweet Vermouth, and chocolate bitters) and The Prospect of Love (Prospector Rye, Mia Amata Amaro, rose-and-lychee black-tea syrup, lemon juice, and Ms. Better’s Bitters Miraculous Foamer). These lovely libations are made exclusively with Odd Society Spirits and are best enjoyed at the bar in the physically distanced company of Povarchook or Scope. $1 from every Neighbourly Love cocktail sold will benefit The BC Hospitality Foundation.

Our First “Bourbon” is Here

The fourth release of our brewery collaboration whiskies: Powell Bourbon-Style Corn Whisky is available at the distillery on Friday, January 22!

Our Powell Bourbon-Style Whisky was made in collaboration with our good friends at Powell Brewery, located just down the road. This is our first “bourbon” and was inspired by Powell’s experimental corn California common. We can’t technically call it bourbon because it wasn’t made in the US but the mash bill is 75% corn, 20% rye, and 5% malted barley. The mash was soured overnight at the brewery (A special thanks to Okanagan Spirits for helping us source BC-grown corn suitable for distilling), and the whisky was aged for three years in a 200 litre brand new American white oak barrel at the distillery. Rich and smooth, with typical corn sweetness, this whisky is a very special bourbon-style treat!

Price: 375 ml, $40 (tax included) at the distillery. Limit two bottles per person.

Available at the distillery Friday, January 22, online Sunday, January 24 and select BC private liquor stores starting this weekend (prices may vary).

Bee-cause we love honey + whisky….

WE ARE NOW SOLD OUT!

??Our next collaboration whisky is one honey of a dram. Odd Society Hives for Humanity Honey Single Malt Whisky is available exclusively at the distillery, starting Thursday, December 10.

We collaborate with Hives for Humanity to make barrel aged honey once a year. After the batch of honey from three years ago was removed from the barrel, we refilled the cask with single malt and let it age. The result is a luscious, honey-infused winter sipper.

Odd Society Spirits Hives for Humanity Collaboration Honey Whisky is available in 375mL bottles and priced at $42 with $1 from every bottle sold benefiting Hives for Humanity. This is an extremely rare release so we will be limiting purchases to one bottle per person.

?Note: The year’s batch of Hives for Humanity Honey is a gin-barrel aged honey and will be released at the distillery on Monday, Dec. 21 in celebration of solstice. Stay tuned for more on that.

The mashup of the year: brewer + distiller collaboration whiskies

Odd Society Spirits partners with breweries to make unique whiskies!

We collaborated with four neighbouring breweries to create a series of distinct whiskies that express the individual craft of each partnering brewery. The idea had been percolating for some time but it was set into motion more than three years ago, when Legacy Liquor approached us about creating two celebratory collaboration whiskies in honour of the store’s 10-year anniversary.

The first stages of developing whisky are essentially the same as beer: mashing and fermenting grains. Most of these limited release whiskies were mashed at the brewery and then fermented, distilled and aged at Odd Society. Changing the types of grains in each recipe and the method for aging resulted in four uniquely expressive whiskies.

Our distiller Joel McNichol, was a brewer before he started distilling and had been spending a lot of my time with other brewers. Joel and his friends intended to create something rare and cool together that honours our crafts and our community. And we feel they succeeded.

The partnering breweries in this series are Doan’s Craft Brewing Co., Parallel 49 Brewing, Powell Brewery and Storm Brewing. We will release three of the four collaboration whiskies at the distillery on Thursday, Nov.26, followed by Powell’s in January 2021.

Doan’s Rye Stout Whisky: Doan’s is known for its use of rye in most of its beers and fans of its Rye Stout will appreciate this whisky. The stout recipe calls for chocolate malt—unable to source this particular roast level in B.C., cold-brew coffee from Agro Rosters was used in its place along with as much rye as possible in the mash. This whisky has a heavy roasted nose, dark fruit and chocolate notes with a distinctive stout finish.

P49 Old Boy Single Malt Whisky: Based on the recipe of the Parallel 49 beer of choice of many brewers—Old Boy Classic Brown Ale—this whisky is a more of a traditional single malt with a distinct Old Boy taste of toffee and chocolate.

(SOLD OUT) Storm Black Plague Stout Rye Whisky: Unlike the other two, this whisky was mashed at Odd Society using 100% rye grain. It is a bit of a full-circle release as when we first opened the distillery and didn’t yet have mashing equipment, Storm provided our mash. The spirit was aged in an ex-Storm Brewing Black Plague Stout barrel, which was originally a first fill bourbon barrel that we used to age vodka in. The barrel is back at Storm aging its next Black Plague Stout. We blended the stout barrel-aged whisky with a bit of single malt and the result is a true-to-form dram with a spicy rye nose and anise finish. Not as wild as one might expect from Storm but noteworthy none-the-less.

Powell Street Bourbon Style Corn Whisky: Still aging and not available until January 2021, this whisky was inspired by Powell’s experimental corn California common and is the distillery’s first bourbon style corn whisky. Sourcing the correct corn in B.C. proved difficult but the fine folks at Okanagan Spirits connected us with an Okanagan grown grain corn, which was mashed with B.C. malt and then soured overnight at Powell Street Brewery. The resulting corn mash whisky is still aging in brand new American White Oak barrels at the distillery but taste tests confirm a rich, bourbon-style sweetness.

The first three Odd Society Spirits brewery collaboration whiskies—Doan’s, Parallel 49 and Storm—are priced at $39 (tax included) for a 375 mL bottle and will be available at Odd Society’s distillery (1725 Powell St.) starting Thursday, Nov. 26, and online at shop.oddsocietyspirits.com as of Monday, Nov. 30. As this is an exclusive release we will be limiting purchases to two per person and we can’t accommodate holds. The Doan’s and Parallel 49 whiskies will also be available at Legacy Liquor Store.

Terroir-driven Salal Gin returns on Nov. 5

Our seasonal offering of Salal Gin returns!

For the first time ever, we will be releasing two different terroir-driven batches of our Salal Gin: one using berries from Powell River on Thursday, November 5, and the other with berries from Haida Gwaii (release date is yet to be determined but it will be before Christmas).

This year, we received two shipments of salal berries at different times, each handpicked in a single origin along the coast of B.C.. The first, harvested in Powell River by our friend and food forager & educator, Alexander McNaughton, has already arrived and finished steeping in our Wallflower Gin. The second shipment arrived from remote Haida Gwaii last week and has just begun maceration.

The savoury salal berry is a perfect substitute for the blackthorn berry traditionally used in making sloe gin. It imparts tart, tannic and herbaceous properties with a hint of spice to create a West Coast interpretation of the classic British liqueur. Our Salal Gin recently earned an Excellence in Terroir acknowledgement and a gold medal in the Contemporary Gin category at the 2020 Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition.

Odd Society Spirits Salal Gin is sold in 375 mL bottles for $30 and can be purchased at the distillery (1725 Powell Street) Thursday through Saturday, through the our online shop and at select private liquor stores starting November 5. Perfect timing for holiday shopping, shipping and sipping!
