A L-OAK-AL SMOKE

SMOKE & OAK: GARRYANA OAK WHISKY 🌳💨🥃

We are excited to announce our Garryana Oak Whisky, the second release in our Smoke & Oak series in conjunction with BC Distilled. This whisky includes malt that has been smoked with Garry wood, the only oak species native to BC and has been aged for four years in once-used American White Oak barrels.

This Smoke & Oak has a tobacco-style smoke on the nose and a rich, buttery mouthfeel. The flavour is reminiscent of having smores by a campfire with burnt brown sugar sweetness and graham cracker biscuits. Sarsaparilla, sassafras, mace and cocoa powder also come through to end in a nice, crisp finish.

Seasons Change – New Releases

16ef3b6c-b470-4b80-8533-d610e17b9a22

Dear Friends, Family, Fellow Distillers, and Spirit Lovers,

It’s been a wonderful summer and we’ve been busy. Thank you for all your support. With a change of season come several new releases that we are excited about.

Odd Society Barrel Aged Vermouth
Wins Double Gold, Best Vermouth at the 2016 New York World Wine and Spirits Competition

This is an amazing story of accidental experimentation. About a year ago, we had just finished a bottling run. It turned out we had a small amount vermouth left at the bottom of the fermenter. It was cloudy with yeast and botanicals but we didn’t want to dump it so decided to filter it into a barrel to see what happens. A year passed and one day we said, hey, there’s that barrel, we should try it. We were blown away at the change. We liked it enough to send it to New York and recently received word on the award.

Odd Society is very pleased to announce the release of our first barrel aged vermouth next Friday, October 21 at the distillery. Sadly, we have just over a hundred bottles for sale. (BA Vermouth, 375 ml, $28 per bottle, limit 1 bottle per person, at the distillery only)

Salal Gin – Available Thursday, November 10

2016 was an amazing year for Salal berries. They were big and beautiful, almost like small grapes. We were able to source much larger amounts from Tofino, and for the first time we received a shipment of berries from Haida Gwaii, which were particularly delicious. So after almost two months of maceration, we are pleased to announce the release of our Salal Gin on Thursday, November 10. The gin will be available at the distillery and some select liquor stores as well as some bars and restaurants while supplies last. (Salal Gin, 375 ml, $30 per bottle).

Odd Society bids a Very Sad, Fond Farewell to Kylie Bartlett!

Kylie Bartlett has been an amazing addition to the Odd Society team. She was both our bar manager and our local sales rep. If you’ve been to the distillery you will have seen Kylie shaking away behind the bar. Kylie and her partner Arthur Wynne, have been away from Australia for almost 15 years, living and working in Ireland and England, before spending almost 10 years in Vancouver. After all these years, they are returning home with plans to set up their own cocktail business. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Kylie for all her contributions and wish her well.

Single Malt Whisky Release, Peated Whisky, and more

Our first single malt whisky will be released before Christmas. We will announce the date soon. Thank you for being so patient.

The experimentation continues as we now set our sights on peated and smoked whiskies. The problem is that there are no smoked or peated B.C-grown malts commercially available. Our answer has been to build our own smoker. We soak regular BC pale malt and then resmoke it. We have also been experimenting with other ideas to introduce peaty/smoky flavors. Our first peated whisky will be barreled this week. The new make spirit is delicious. But how much of that initial peatiness will survive time in a barrel? Stay tuned (at least three years). We plan to offer a choice of peated whisky in our upcoming January cask sale.

Preparing for the Summer: Gin and Beer

f0d72c3b-867f-4afa-aae9-59de8e0fe3bc

Dear Friends, Family, Fellow Distillers, and Spirit Lovers,

We hope you are enjoying the start of summer. As the weather warms, we have several exciting announcements!

More Beer on Tap! – Wallflower Gin meets Steamworks Blueberry Hefeweizen this Friday and beyond

Our first beer collaborations with Storm Brewing, Powell Street Brewery, and Strange Fellows Brewing were a huge success. A big thank you to our amazing neighbors!

And so we continue our quest to combine two great warm-weather thirst quenchers: gin and beer. This time, our Wallflower gin is being mixed by Steamworks Brewing into their Blueberry Hefeweizen. The result is a light, fruity, deliciously pleasing summer beer. Please join us at the distillery for a glass of Blueberry Wallflower Hefeweizen starting tomorrow. If you are downtown, you can also enjoy a glass at the Steamworks Brewpub Brewery in Gastown while supplies last.

We plan to have a beer collaboration on tap at the distillery throughout the summer. Upcoming beers, already in the works, include:

Coal Harbour Brewing – Wallflower Gose – a wonderfully light, savory Coal Harbour Gose beer aged in Wallflower gin barrels. A perfect hot summer quencher.

Powell Street Brewing – Ode to Wallflower – Ode to Citra beer aged in Wallflower gin barrels, back due to popular demand and general deliciousness.

Steamworks Brewpub Brewery – East Van Oatmeal Milk Stout – Steamwork’s Outmeal Milk Stout aged in East Van aged vodka barrels. This one will sit for several months to increase its smooth creamy richness in time for the fall.

Many more beer ideas to come…

Whisky Cask Report

A big thank you to all cask owners who came out and tasted their whiskies on June 5th and June 12th. It is safe to say it was a success. By all accounts, the whisky is progressing as it should, and even better than expected. The first group of cask owners will have their whisky bottled next year in 2017. In the meantime, we are busy filling our own standard-sized bourbon barrels for the future and storing them offsite. We also have some interesting whisky announcements coming soon.

Change is in the Air

5bc58ffa-b7bc-4d4d-bd4d-f986dbb967d3

Dear Friends, Family, Fellow Distillers, and Spirit Lovers,

Odd Society has three important announcements to share with you!

Changing of the Guard: a Farewell and a Welcome

Odd Society is sad to announce that Joshua Beach, our illustrious co-distiller, is leaving Odd Society and moving to Ontario. Josh’s long-term plan was always to move back home and now seemed an opportune time, after more than a decade in Europe and almost three years in Vancouver. As luck and timing would have it, Josh has landed an incredible job near his home town as Master Distiller for a massive distillery being built in Niagara-on-the-Lake called the Wayne Gretzky Distillery. Be sure to look out for their whisky in a few years’ time. We extend Josh a huge thank you for all his innovations at Odd Society and wish him success in his new adventure and new stage in life.

On a happier note, Odd Society is pleased to announce that we have hired an assistant distiller, Joel McNichol. Joel worked for several years as a brewer and jack-of-all-trades at R & B Brewing and has been training with Josh over the last month. Joel will be working his magic in the back, mashing and fermenting, and ultimately taking on distilling duties. Join us in extending Joel a big warm welcome!

Odd Society presents Beer on Tap!
Wallflower Gin meets Ode to Citra Beer

Barrel aging beer is a time tested tradition that leads to wonderful malt libations. Now that we are allowed to serve beer in our lounge, we decided it was time to take the next step and start collaborating with the many fabulous neighbors that surround us. Several weeks ago, we dropped off some empty oaken gin barrels at Powell Street Brewery, just down the street, which they promptly filled with Ode to Citra beer. Dave, master brewer, recently deemed the beer ready. It’s been kegged, carbonated, and is ready to drink. This will be the first in a series of experimental, collaborative beers using Odd Society barrels that we will be serving. Please join us for a glass of Ode to Wallflower beer on tap starting this Thursday, April 7, while limited supplies last! We are staying open an extra hour this Thursday. Ode to Wallflower is available at the distillery only.

Alterna Films Video Announcement

Dear Friends, Family, Fellow Distillers, and Spirit Lovers,

We have a single announcement today, which we are incredibly excited about.

Check Out this 60 Second Film – It’s like a Movie Trailer!

We are humbled that Odd Society has inspired local filmmaker RJ Sauer to produce a short commercial film showcasing our East Van Vodka. Last week we held a launch party at the distillery and we got to view the film for the first time. The fruit of their labor is truly amazing.

A Video/Commercial featuring East Van Vodka

About a month ago, Odd Society was approached by RJ Sauer of Alterna Films. Alterna Films is a Vancouver-based production company for TV, film, commercials and web. In their own words, they specialize in visual storytelling. RJ had a fully developed story line for a spirits commercial that they wanted to enter in international competitions and use in their portfolio to attract new clients. They had the idea; they were just searching for the right spirit/label to use. Enter East Van Vodka. Since the action is set in the Deep South during civil war times, Cornelius, the mustached owl on the bottle was an amazing fit. We won’t give away the story line but we are very excited to see and share the final cut. Please check out Alterna Films and pictures from the shoot, as well as photos of all the other cool things they are working on. (Instagram:@rjsauer; www.alternafilms.ca)

Salal Gin Release

Dear Friends, Family, Fellow Distillers, and Spirit Lovers,

The holidays are almost upon us and we would be happy and honoured to be part of your celebrations. We have a few new offerings as well as our trusted regulars.

Salal Gin Released this Friday, December 4,

Our second annual release of Salal Gin will take place this Friday, December 4th. Salal Gin is Odd Society’s answer to British Sloe Gin. Since sloe berries aren’t native to Canada, we hit upon salal as our local equivalent. We had high hopes of releasing “vast” quantities this year but it was a dry season and salal berries and foragers were not plentiful. Luckily, Alexander McNaughton, a forager based in Tofino, was able to gather some for us, as well as Barbara, a resident of the Sunshine Coast. We thank you both! All that to say we produced a total of 80 bottles. This is almost a 100% increase over last year.

Bottles will be available at the distillery only, starting Friday, December 4th from 1:00 p.m. onwards for $30 (one bottle limit per person). We hope to see you then.

30-Liter Whisky Cask Offering
Choose Between 100% Rye or 100% Malted Barley

We are preparing for our annual cask offering in January. This year we are pleased to announce that cask owners will have the choice of filling their cask with either rye whisky OR single malt whisky. As you may have heard, a Canadian rye was voted World Whisky of the Year 2016 by Jim Murray. The next few years will be very exciting as more craft distilleries begin to bring their own whiskies on line. Stay tuned for more cask offer info in December.

If you are interested in being added to our cask offer mailing list, please email miriam@oddsocietyspirits.com.

Odd T-Shirts and Flasks

We are once again offering Odd T-shirts and flasks. T-shirts have just arrived and flasks will be available next week.

New Cocktails

Kylie has been hard at work creating holiday cocktails. In honor of our salal release, we will be offering our version of a French 75 called the “West Coast Salal 75”, which features Salal Gin, sparkling wine, and lemon.

Here’s a delicious spirit-forward drink you may want to try:
